On Feb. 27, 2011, a completion ceremony was held in the Al Ansab Water Treatment Plant. Oman’s national and location officials, Chinese diplomats in Oman and SINOHYDRO project representatives, among others, joined the activities in celebration of the recently finished Muscat Wastewater Project Phase I. As soon as the project was completed, it brought great improvement to the regional sewage system, which had been in extremely poor condition prior to the work.

Muscat is the capital of the Sultanate of Oman, and it is also the seat of the country’s government, home to most of the private sector companies and an increasingly popular tourist venue. With an ever-increasing population – projected to exceed one million by 2025 – the government set up the Oman Wastewater Services Company (OWSC) to address the urgent need for a wastewater management system. According to the master plan for Muscat drawn up by OWSC, the project aims to serve 80% of the population in the six wilayats (districts) of Greater Muscat, Muttrah, Bausher, Seeb, Al Amerat and Quriyat by the end of 2014, and an additional 10% of the population three years later. Ultimately, it will cover an area of 3,670 km², providing sewage services to 46,000 households and supplying treated water for irrigation.

In February 2005, SINOHYDRO signed the contract with Oman Wastewater Services Company (OWSC) to install approximately 330 km of the wastewater pipeline and more than 70 km of irrigation pipeline, updating the drainage system for 18,000 households in the area. The total contract value was around $150 million, and the construction period was 36 months.
